SC issues order not to implement EC’s decision to make it mandatory for people’s representatives to resign before filing nominations

KATHMANDU, March 21: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday issued a short-term interim order not to implement the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to make it mandatory for people’s representatives to resign before filing nominations for the next term in the upcoming local level polls.

A single bench of Justice Bam Kumar Shrestha made the order to this effect on Tuesday.

The SC has also summoned both the parties for discussion over the issue on March 27.

Earlier, Chairman of Helambu Rural Municipality, Nima Gylazen Sherpa had filed a writ petition against the EC’s decision.

The poll body has made a decision to make it mandatory for those local representatives holding offices to resign before filing their candidacy for the next term.

The candidates for the upcoming local level polls have been asked to register their candidacy on March 24 and 25.
