Why is the record of most runs being broken one after the other in the ongoing IPL?

Kathmadu. A total of 74 matches will be played in the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Out of that, 38 games have been completed till Monday night. Of course, more than half of the matches in the ongoing IPL have been played. 

Many records have been set till the 17th edition of the IPL is halfway through. The new record of most runs in an innings in the history of IPL was also created in this edition. Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 287 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore by losing three wickets. 

This is the most runs scored by any team in a single innings in the history of IPL. Bangalore, who batted back in that match, scored 262 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Hyderabad won the match by just 25 runs in which both the teams made huge totals.  

Until the previous edition of IPL, the highest score scored by any team in an innings was 263 runs. That score was made by Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors in 2013 IPL. No one could break that record for 10 years.

However, that record made in 2013 has been broken many times in the 17th edition of IPL. In other words, more than 263 runs have been scored four times in the ongoing edition of IPL. More than two hundred runs have been made many times.

In the match against Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore, both teams scored more than 200 runs. Kolkata won the match by one run. In the match against Delhi, Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 266 runs by losing seven wickets. 

Similarly, in the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals Beach, both teams scored more than 200 runs. Rajasthan won the match by two wickets. In the match against Mumbai, Chennai Super Kings also scored 206 runs.

Similarly, in the match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, both teams scored more than two hundred runs. Mumbai won that match by 29 runs. Kolkata Knight Riders scored 272 runs in the match against Delhi Capitals. Kolkata won the match by 106 runs. 

In the match against Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad also scored 277 runs. Mumbai also scored 246 runs in that match. Hyderabad won that match by 31 runs. Chennai Super Kings scored 206 runs in the match against Gujarat Titans. 

Chennai won that match by 63 runs. In the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Hyderabad, both teams scored more than 200 runs. Kolkata won that match by four runs.

Impact Player Rules 

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) implemented the impact player rule in 2023. However, its direct impact has been seen in the 2024 edition. According to the impact player rules, the team batting first can enter the field with seven batsmen. With those seven batsmen, the team batting first can score a significant number of runs.

After that, when the same team goes down to bowl, he can remove one of the batsmen who was batting first and include a new bowler in that position as an impact player in the playing–11. However, the team has to announce the name of the impact player beforehand. 

Naturally, when a team enters the field with seven batsmen, it is natural to score more runs in such a situation. In the ongoing IPL, teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders have scored more than 200 runs by taking advantage of this rule.

Comparatively small boundary

In the 17th edition of IPL, especially Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders seem to be batting aggressively. Mumbai Indians have also batted aggressively in some matches. In addition to this, the boundaries of some stadiums are less than 60 meters in the ongoing IPL. This is why Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad have scored more than 200 runs four times.

Some cricket analysts have even commented that the bowlers are becoming innocent in the ongoing season of IPL. Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar also says that the boundary line should be made longer to prevent the bowlers from becoming innocent. In the ongoing IPL, the world famous bowlers like Mohammad Siraj, Enrich Norje, Mitchell Starc also seem to be harmless.
