Dominance of ‘Big Five’ in Congress
KATHMANDU, Feb 2: Dissatisfaction has started brewing among top leaders of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) amid the activities being carried out in the Central Working Committee against the spirit of participatory democratic practice after the completion of the party’s 14th General Convention. The three Central Working Committee meetings of the Nepali Congress held so far have also hinted at the new trend in the party.
Decisions were taken by five key leaders ahead of all the three meetings of the Central Committee and were tabled just for endorsement. Leaders allege that five Congress office-bearers---- President Sher Bahadur Deuba, vice-presidents duo Purna Bahadur Khadka and Dhanraj Gurung and two general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma --- tried to make the Central Working Committee a place for 'approval' rather than 'debates and discussions'.
The CWC is yet to get 20 more members. However, the leaders worry whether the ‘Big Five’ are attempting to make it [CWC] dysfunctional. The domain of information discussions could not be extended at least to the 14-member office bearers’ team; the treasurer is yet to be nominated, though.
The practice of 'Big Five' is being flourished by excluding eight other joint general secretaries in the party.
