Parliamentary hearing of proposed ambassadors put off until Dec 3

KATHMANDU: The meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee under the Federal Parliament scheduled for Sunday was postponed owing to the lack of quorum.

The meeting was scheduled to conduct a parliamentary hearing of the proposed ambassadors to India, China and Britain.

The committee, which should have 15 members as per the constitution, presently has 12 members. Sunday’s meeting, however, witnessed the presence of only five members.

Committee Chairperson Laxman Lal Karna said the meeting had to be suspended due to the lack of quorum.

He said that the required number of the committee members could not be present in the meeting as the members from the Nepali Congress (NC) are busy in the party's convention in different levels and those from the main opposition party, CPN (UML), are also engaged in connection with its upcoming General Congress.

Karna informed that the next meeting of the committee has been scheduled for December 3.

The government had recommended Dr Shankar Sharma as the ambassador to India, Prof Shreedhar Khatri to the United States of America and Gyan Chandra Acharya to the United Kingdom on October 28.

The committee had received a proposal for the parliamentary hearing on October 25. The law requires that the parliamentary hearing should be conducted within 45 days of the registration of the proposal to this connection.
