People’s representatives wishing to join CPN (US), DSP required to go for verification by Sept 7

KATHMANDU: Election Commission has asked the people’s representatives at the provincial and local level to verify themselves by September 7 if they wish to leave the CPN-UML and join the newly registered CPN (Unified Socialist).

A meeting of the office bearers of the poll body, on Sunday, issued the same deadline to those representatives to those wishing to revocate their affiliation to the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) and join Democratic Socialist Party (DSP).

A splinter faction of the UML formed the CPN (US) under the chairmanship of Madhav Kumar Nepal while JSP’s dissident faction registered the DSP presided by Mahantha Thakur.

Those aspiring to join the new parties are required to present at the EC in person and authenticate their identities by 5 PM on September 7.

The government had introduced an ordinance that amends the provisions for the party split. Either 20 percent central committee members or 20 percent parliamentarians can form a new party, as per the amended provisions.
