Congress demands action against PM Oli, Minister Shrestha for breaching election code of conduct

KATHMANDU, May 20: Main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) has demanded action against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Krishna Gopal Shrestha for flouting election code of conduct. 

NC parliamentary party office on Thursday filed a complaint  against PM Oli, who is also the chairman of CPN-UML and Minister Shrestha following the Parliamentary Party Working Committee’s decision taken Wednesday. The meeting concluded that the Election Commission should take action against Prime Minister Oli and Minister Shrestha for breaching the election code of conduct through their public statements. 

A day before the poll day, Prime Minister Oli ,on Wednesday, appealed for votes for Ram Bahadur Thapa, who is contesting by-elections for a vacant seat in the National Assembly, from the UML. Minister Shestha also issued a statement asking for votes for Thapa.

The NC urged the poll body to take action against them as per Articles 5 D (3) and (5) and Article (6) of the Election Code of Conduct-2015.

The Election Commission on Wednesday said that the 48-hour silence period for NA by-polls began on Tuesday midnight. Issuing a statement, the poll body asked the political parties and others not to violate the election code of conduct.
