Dark side of foreign employment: 10,000 Nepali migrant workers die in last 14 years

KATHMANDU, Aug 17: Foreign employment is one of the key sources of income for Nepal. More than 1,700 Nepali migrants travel abroad daily. Among them, many do not return safely to their home. As per the latest data, more than 10,000 Nepali migrant workers have died in foreign lands in the past 14 years.

According to the Department of the Foreign Employment, as many as 10,932 Nepali migrant workers have died in the foreign lands in the past 14 years. 

Last year, the highest number of these deaths were recorded in Malaysia with 411, then Saudi Arabia with 389, Qatar with 294, United Arab Emirates with 206, Kuwait with 65, Bahrain with 23, South Korea with 16 and Oman with 14, according to the department.
