Know about Urmila Shrestha who was killed at Letang on Sunday

Urmila Shrestha, 24, originally from Khotang, was recruited in Nepal Police three years ago.

KATHMANDU, March 21: Urmila Shrestha, 24, a police woman, was killed on Sunday in an attack by terrified and outraged locals and students.

Accusing Manoj Poudel, a teacher of Letang-5 based Siksha Bikash Secondary School, of sexually abusing a student, the students of the school and the locals had staged a protest in the school premises, demanding death sentence against the accused. 

Shrestha, who was killed in a clash, was recruited in Nepal Police only three years ago and had married recently. Not only Shrestha but most of her family serve in the Nepal Police.

Urmila and her team were mobilized to bring the situation under control. Later on Sunday evening, when the police arrested the accused teacher, the locals decided to take action against the accused themselves and attacked the security personnel. In the incident, Urmila  was hit by a sharp weapon and breathed her last while undergoing treatment.

Shrestha was recruited as a policewoman on July 17, 2019. She was born on 31 October, 1995 at Barapokhari Rural Municipality-4 of Khotang. She  was a single daughter of her parents. She has one elder and a younger brother. She graduated from Udayapur-based Triyuga Janata Campus.

Urmila was married to Kumar Shrestha, a policeman, on May 2, 2021. Her brother Bhuvan Shrestha is also serving in the Nepal Police in the post of assistant inspector.
