House session prorogued: What about the impeachment motion tabled in parliament?

KATHMANDU, March 16: President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Tuesday ended the ongoing winter session of the Federal Parliament (House of Representatives and National Assembly).

With this, the process of moving the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana is sure to be delayed. When asked about the impeachment motion, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Dilendra Badu maintained that a phase of the impeachment process has ended after being tabled in parliament. “Further processes will be continued in the next House session,” Badu added.

“After completion of discussion in parliament, the matter will be handed over to the 11-member impeachment recommendation committee,” Minister Badu told Ratopati. “This too will happen in the next House session,” he added.

The government on Sunday formed an 11-member impeachment recommendation committee to move the impeachment motion against CJ Rana. Of them, four members are of the CPN-UML.

The recommendation committee has been given a deadline of three months to investigate the case.

“If the committee fails to complete their task by given time, the deadline can be extended by one month,” said Minister Badu.

Why did the government end the House session?

According to the government, the House session has ended due to a continuous obstruction by the main opposition party, CPN-UML.

“Besides, the parties in parliament are busy preparing for the upcoming local level polls,” said Minister Badu.
