With river changing its course, India encroaches Nepal’s territory

KATHMANDU, March 15: Jamuni River, a no-man’s land at the Danusha-based India-Nepal border point, changed course due to flooding. The river encroached around 500 meters of land in Mukhiyapatti Musharniya Municipality-2 of Danusha district in Nepal. Following the incident, the Indian side has begun claiming the encroached land as India’s territory.

Bikhari Yadav, a local of Mukhiyapatti Musharniya Municipality-2, is worried as his land now lies on the Indian side with the river changing its course. According to Yadav, his land is now being claimed by India, maintaining that it belongs to their territory.

Likewise, Jewacha Yadav, a farmer in the same village also shares a similar story. His land is also being claimed by India.

“The river, which stood as a no-man's land between two countries, changed its course due to flooding and encroached lands of as many as 10 Nepali farmers. The Indian sides claim that the encroached land now belongs to them,” said Naresh Prasad Yadav, Ward Chairperson of Mukhiyapatti Musharniya Municipality-2.

Reports of India encroaching Nepal’s land is not new. But, authorities concerned are doing very little to solve the issue for one and all.
