Flood victims under tents for seven years

SURKHET, Aug 29: It has been nearly eight years since Narendra Bahadur KC, a local of Surkhet Barahatal Rural Municipality-8, Girighat became homeless due to flood in 2014. 

KC wished he could sleep on a warm bed under the strong roof. However, his plight has remained the same since he turned homeless. His family braved cold winters and hot summers under the tents. 

Every rainy season adds fuel to the fire and makes his life more severe. The tent, already torn and has several holes, hardly protects from rain. How to remain safe and sound has been the prime concern of the family in every monsoon. At the same time, the family has to struggle to make ends meet. 

Narendra’s family is not a single-family to suffer. At least 125 households at the temporary settlement along the Surkhet-Jumla road section have also been living a hard life.

Narendra said, “Though it’s a temporary shelter, we have now considered it as our own home. However, life is not easy without a job and any source of income.” 

There used to be 385 households in the initial days. Some of them were rescued and relocated. Those who were left behind blame the government for ignoring the real victims and protecting those who were partially affected.
