Nepal’s COVID-19 casetally soars to 359,610 including record-high 8,659 new cases

Kathmandu Valley alone has 30,155 active cases

KATHMANDU, May 5: As many as 55 people succumbed to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the past 24 hours. 

This is the highest single-day fatality number since the country reported the first death on May 16 last year. With this, Nepal’s COVID-19 death tally has soared to 3,475. 

According to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), a total of 8,659 people tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours. As many as 8,605 people found infected through the 20,756 RT-PCR tests and 54 others were diagnosed with the disease through the 616 antigen tests. 

This has taken the country’s cumulative casetally to 359,610. The ministry spokesperson Dr Jageshwor Gautam shared that 80.6 percent of the total infected patients have so far recovered from the disease. 

Kathmandu Valley sees 3,835 new cases 

The three districts in the Kathmandu Valley reported a total of 4,825 cases in the past 24 hours. This has taken the Valley’s infection tally to 168,019 -- 133,304 in Kathmandu, 12,629 in Bhaktapur and 22,086 in Lalitpur districts. 

The officials shared that 15 patients succumbed to the disease in the last one day in the Valley alone. 

Of the 66,352 active cases of the disease across the country, 30,155 patients are from the three districts of the Valley alone as of Wednesday afternoon.
