Sale of ‘Panipuri’ at roadsides banned in Lalitpur metropolis from today

KATHMANDU, June 27: The Lalitpur Metropolitan City has banned sale of ‘pani puri and chatpate’ at roadsides from Monday.

The metropolis has taken the decision in a bid to curb further spread of cholera in Kathmandu Valley.

So far 12 cases of cholera have been detected in people living in Bagbazar, Dillibazar, Sanepa, Balaju, Kapan and Naikap areas in Kathmandu Valley, according to Dr. Chuman Lal Das, director of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division.

The metropolis has maintained that if anyone is found defying the government’s decision, their crafts will be confiscated. 

Cholera is an acute enteric infection caused by ingesting the bacteria Vibrio cholerae present in contaminated water or food. It is mainly linked to insufficient access to safe drinking water and inadequate sanitation. It is an extremely virulent disease that can cause severe acute watery diarrhea resulting in high morbidity and mortality, and can spread rapidly, depending on the frequency of exposure, the exposed population and the setting. Cholera affects both children and adults and can be fatal if untreated.
