Indian PM urges countrymen to shun use of plastic, polythene

NEW DELHI –Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged the countrymen to shun the use of plastic and polythene, as it was creating a negative impact on the environment, wildlife and people's health.

He said that India was proud to host the World Environment Day this year (on June 5). Describing it as a major achievement for the country, he said that it was an acknowledgment of India's efforts to lead the world in reducing the effects of climate change.

Addressing the countrymen on All India Radio (AIR) through his monthly "Mann ki Baat" (Talking from the Heart), Modi urged the people to observe the World Environment Day on June 5 with vigour, and to concentrate on tree plantation for a better environment.

Modi's AIR episode takes place on the last Sunday of every month and this was his 46th episode.
The prime minister further stated that the environment day's theme this year was to beat plastic pollution. "I appeal to you not to use low grade plastic and polythene and understand the importance of the theme," Modi said. Enditem
