Syrian state media reports Israeli attack on country's south

DAMASCUS–Syria's state media reported on Wednesday an Israeli attack on the country's southern province of Daraa, saying it did not cause any casualties.

State TV said that the strike was directed at the al-Harrah hill, which is home to Syrian army posts and a mountain south of the capital Damascus overlooking wide parts of southern Syria.

Over the years, Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes against Iranian targets in Syria, which are entrenched in the south and the Golan Heights near the border with Israel.

Tension between Israel and Syria has stayed tense as Israel has also launched frequent missile attacks on some military bases in war-torn Syria.

Israel has mostly kept silent on its actions, while the Syrian government has repeatedly charged that Israel supports the terror groups in Syria and the Jewish state's repeated strikes are meant to lift the rebels' morale.

As the birthplace of the Syrian war that erupted in 2011, Daraa is both symbolically and militarily significant for the Syrian army, which won a big victory by recapturing the province from the rebels in 2018.
